Signs And Wonders, Eclipse Edition (Defining Democracy Down, Five.)

Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

For thus saith the Lord God; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

For thus saith the Lord unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

But seek not Bethel, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to naught.

Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name:

That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the Lord, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the Lord God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph. ~Amos 5:1-15

So there's an Eclipse coming up this afternoon. It's partly cloudy and hazy here in northern Michigan, I doubt we'll see all that much.

But the right-wing idiots are freaking out about it, to the point where Marjorie Taylor Greene posted this shit on Twitter, threatening all the rest of us with her "god" until we "repent." Note she's not very clear about who needs to repent, or from what. and Sarah Huckabee Sanders has declared a State Of Emergency in Arkansas, effective until Wednesday.

For the love of God, why??

Seems like if anybody's being judged, it's the "Conservatives" who've followed after people like Donald Trump instead of obeying the Lord's Word.

And for all that, Trump seems poised to just gank the Pro-Lifers and head back in the other direction, since getting rid of Roe has proven to be massively unpopular...although I have a couple caveats on that statement; I doubt Trump would do one damn thing about state abortion bans currently in place (He'll want to throw that bone to Red States, I think) and I very seriously doubt that the public will trust either Republicans in general, or Trump in particular, with that issue.

The hard-on for getting rid of Roe Vs. Wade wasn't because of Trump, it was Republican dogma for 40 years.

Also, there's huge protests against Viktor Orban in Hungary, lots of people in the streets demanding his resignation because of corruption and incompetence.

Which suggests he's losing his core supporters, since most Hungarians who don't support that jackass just left, since they could because Hungary is part of the EU.

Don't worry, though, if it all falls apart I'm sure Orban has an amazing career as a Fox News pundit ahead of him. So there's that, I guess.

I'd say "I wonder who these idiots will start lionizing next if Orban goes down" but I'm sure they'll just switch full-on, open allegiance to Vladimir Putin like a lot of elected Republicans did already.

Likewise, the Israelis appear to realize that they fucked up when they attacked World Central Kitchen workers. In an apparent response to US pressure (I recall that Chef Jose Andres has a hell of a lot of Democratic elected friends, including Nancy Pelosi and apparently Clinton-era SECDEF Leon Panetta) The IDF has withdrawn from several areas including Khan Younis, and has started letting aid convoys through.

Seems to me like maybe we wouldn't have this problem if the rest of the world had reacted as strongly to the deaths of normal Palestinian folks for months as they did to the deaths of seven WCK employees??

I love World Central Kitchen and I think Jose Andres is a fucking hero, hell, I quoted him in some of my earlier posts on the Ukraine war, and I'm damned glad he's taking a stand on the issue...but we've had people marching in the streets all around the world since the war started

How come nobody listened to them??

Why did it take both massive overreach by some idiot right-wing IDF Colonel and Chef Jose Andres seeing what happened and saying "Oh Hell No" to get people to get off they ass and do something??

I mean, I guess it took a Democratic cocktail-party bro to move things in the right direction, but at least Democrats can be moved to do something, by something other than rabid self-interest, if just barely.

And Evangelicals and Republicans will call even one guy standing up to the Israeli Right and getting some of the Democrats to do the same as a reason for "God" to judge America, because Palestinian lives don't mean anything to them.

Yeah, Hamas is evil and needs to be defeated, but for fuck's sake most Gazans are not members of Hamas, let alone fighters in the organization.

And military forces involved in conflict, per international law, have a duty to minimize civilian casualties and render aid, or at least allow humanitarian aid to be provided!

What's wrong with these people??

If God is going to judge anybody, wouldn't it be the people who are breaking Commandments like "Thou Shalt Not Kill??"

Why do Republicans always think God is going to judge in favor of Republican politics?? Either He's God or he's Not. You'd think these motherfuckers would...like I, as a former Republican, do...assume that God has His own opinion and it's probably not the same as mine.

But this is America, and I don't have to care.

And the Enlightenment values that this country was founded on say my government doesn't have to care, either.

If "Christians" and Republicans want to dance around fires and shout "Unga Bunga" and build Idols in their own images and use that to justify their bullshit...and seek after Signs And Wonders like the Bible tells them not to...the Constitution says that's their right.

But they don't have the right to force that shit on the rest of us.

How come Republicans never say Republicans have to repent?? That seems a bit suspicious to me.

They don't have the right to Define Democracy Down in favor of Dark Ages horseshit that makes them feel powerful.

It's either the 21st Century, or it isn't

You either believe in freedom or you don't.

Слава Україна!

Therefore the Lord, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skillful of lamentation to wailing.

Credit to Phil Plait on Bluesky

And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the Lord.

Woe unto you that desire the day of the Lord! to what end is it for you? the day of the Lord is darkness, and not light.

As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

Shall not the day of the Lord be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies.

Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

~Amos 5:16-24
