Imagine (Part Two)

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one ~Imagine, John Lennon.
So, this happened over the weekend. Some bunch of Republican ladies held a profoundly strange fashion show, at which nutty White Supremacist Republican candidate Corey Stewart was evidently a guest, and which at some point featured the North Korean national anthem being played.

The...

The what?

Okay, what the hell kind of reversed Radical Chic horse-fuckery is this bullshit?!?!

In case anybody's curious here's the English translation.

Listen, ya'll, I thought these people were supposed to be Republicans, and here they are playing a Stalinist national anthem at a fucking fashion show?

What kind of dystopian hell do these fucking people allow their minds to inhabit that they'd come up with this ridiculous garbage?

For one thing, I thought Republicans were anti-Communist?

Listen, I have a theory. This theories is borne out of personal experience and the whole mess was mostly finally articulated in my head last night while I was thinking about this ridiculous shit.

I think Conservatism has lost its religion...or rather, that its version of Christianity has become so commingled with their screwed up political views and general performative terribleness at acting like human beings that they've lost the plot completely. Instead of trying to find it, they've just thrown it all away and said "Fuck it" not unlike how I felt after my divorce left me feeling like Christianity was basically bullshit. I'll be the first to tell you I went a little nuts for awhile. It really didn't turn out well for anybody.

I saw this earlier this morning, and it sent a chill down my back. Evidently there are people protesting the Red Hen, the place that threw out Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Some of them are carrying signs that say "Trump is love." Now, aside from the general ridiculousness of that statement, there's a theological issue here, let me show you:

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. ~1 John 4:7-10

See what I mean? In my interpretation, to say "Trump is love" or for that matter to say that about any human being is, in fact, wrong.

These fucking people are beginning to equate Trump with God. After a decade worth of equating Obama with the Anti-Christ or Satan, they apparently decided that the next politician in office must be the Savior. I'm a little curious how that would've played out if we'd gotten anybody other than Trump. But then I seriously doubt that Evan McMullen, Hillary Clinton or Jeb Bush or Ted Cruz would have a Cult of Personality (Does Ted Cruz even have a personality? Or would there just be a cult of spider-worshiping druids?) at all. Ben Carson and Gary Johnson probably knew what one of those was at one time but have forgotten. Jill Stein probably would defer to Putin on whether or not she could establish a cult of personality, Bernie I could kind of see it, but I doubt he'd be one to carry it to the level that Trump has. Like, I'm serious, I think these people are going to eventually try to burn down the American experiment and try to install Trump as king, and I think he's dumb and narcissistic and suffering from cognitive decline enough to let them.

I think doing so would start a war. Hell, the rhetoric on the Right, a certain level of defeatism in terms of the country and its culture that I've observed lately, makes it seem possible. I think they know they'd lose. An article I saw the other day certainly made that case for right-wing defeatism. Note that I don't think the author is all that he says he is. Still, he wants a war.

Hell, I think a war is what conservatives want, never mind that there's nothing conservative about a civil war. Never mind that they're far from the only ones with guns or military experience, and probably shorter on training for most of the support functions than average. Never mind that every aspect of American life from government to the military to the states to even who talks to who would be, functionally, split according to who supports this racist Trumpist political bullshit and who doesn't...and with or without Trump that's going to be an issue for a long time. I don't have to tell you which side the Russians would be arming and supporting.

Another one for the "Republicans are basically Communists now" file. Note that this is a Republican, comparing other Republicans to Mao Zedong' s Red Guards and the Cultural Revolution. Between this and the North Korean Anthem shit, I don't think it's hard to figure out what these fucking people's goals are. For one thing, if they and Putin do succeed at causing America to come flying apart, somewhere WILL end up a far-right version of North Korea.

The alarms have sounded, the missiles are on their way down, something is going to get bombed. The key here would have been for people to show up in 2016 and all the off-year elections before it, to take out the capability for Republicans to throw all this crap at us while they performatively went off the rails.

Just sayin,'

The truth is, I think these fucking people know the gig is up. I think they know they're on their way out and they want to steal as much as they can before they go and flip all the rest of us the biggest middle finger possible on the way out the door.

See, this right here, this bullshit from last week? That's the kind of performance art stupidity that my ex-wife used to pull. Things got real bad with that right before we split up, and continued that way for several months after, until-sort of-a routine developed and she calmed down a little.

Just keep in mind this is personality disorder bullshit on a national scale.

The only way to prevent these fucking people from making this crazy shit worse is to show up and vote, and for people to do so in great enough numbers to prevent things from getting worse, which means at least Democratic majorities in the House and Senate.

I think we might make it, but only because a lot of people, including many conservatives, are pissed off at Trump.

These fucking people can't even stand the mildest of criticism or the fierce but fragmented cultural and social resistance to their bullshit that they've faced so far, and all these calls for servility "civility" on the part of the rest of us are just the latest symptom of that. Imagine being so fearful and fragile and small-minded that one of your upper-class professional liars being turned away from a restaurant feels like an attack.

Now imagine what'll happen if enough of us show up to vote a whole bunch of these sons of bitches out of power...

Imagine.(Part One)

Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future and renders the present inaccessible. ~Maya Angelou

I saw this yesterday morning.
I've been intending to write something more about all the crazy shit going on this last week. Every time I go to write something, something else comes up and I lose my train of thought, but this bit stuck. So we'll start here.

Steve King said he didn't want Muslims working in the meat packing plants in his district "Because they think consumers will go to hell for eating pork chops."

First of all, there's just one small problem with that...and that's that those meat packing plants can't get enough white Americans to work there to be able to function. Working in places like that is hard, nasty work and a lot of white Americans think such work is beneath them.

So why shouldn't Albanians or Mexicans, or Somalis or Zimbabweans come here to do it? Someone has to.

If not, why not?

It's not just that, though. It's the staggering, willful ignorance of people like Steve King about other cultures, races and religions that pisses me off.

It's the racism, because while racists often seem to know fuck-all about history, they sure can remember that Black people were slaves once, and for some reason this guy on Fox News brought it up at some point yesterday, as Rick noted. These fucking idiots can't tell you much more about Islam than that Muslims don't drink alcohol or eat pork, but they sure can tell you stuff about this Confederate General or that old-school Segregationist politician. They can't tell you jack shit about Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia or Somalia, but they'll expound exponentially about the evils of Chicago or what's wrong with California. They'll endlessly tell you to be afraid of Islam and Muslims but they generally can't tell you anything about the religion beyond whatever right-wing conspiracy theories they've heard.

If you ask me that's a cheap way to treat such a vast and diverse slice of the human experience. We westerners owe much to Muslims. The mathematics and science that lets me sit here and type this article, surrounded by prancing ferrets, and that when I'm done will allow me to post it...one more drop in the vast sea of information that is the internet...all of the basis for all of this came from Muslims. Algebra as a term, descends from an Arabic word. Modern astronomy and the very basics of navigation all flowed from that same source.

The works of Greek and Roman philosophers...the very basis of Western civilization...were preserved by Muslims in the Middle East, North Africa and Spain while Europe...still shaking off the effects of the fall of Rome a couple of centuries before...beat itself into bloody, illiterate feudal savagery. While in Europe, the flame of knowledge never died out entirely...Astronomers and scientists became part of the King's court. In Syria...the son of a beggar could aspire to become a scientist and achieve his goal if he had the drive and the intelligence.

The Muslim world has cities every bit as vast and cosmopolitan as the West, Cairo, Damascus, Istanbul, Jakarta, Samarkand, Tehran. It contains a staggeringly diverse array of cultures, Arabs, Albanians, Berbers, Black Africans, Bosniaks, Chinese, Crimean Tatars, Malays, Palestinians, Tauregs, Turks, Uyghurs and American and European converts of every color and description, the list goes on.

There are those whose cultures that Islam shaped or added its strength to were snared in the shackles of time, and to whom we modern people owe a great debt for shaping the very world we live in, the Fatimid Shiites of Egypt, fierce and terrible Mongols, mighty Mamluks, and wondrous Moors,

...And Muslims have been in this country, or influenced it, right from the beginning. When Representative Keith Ellison was sworn into office, he swore his oath on a Koran once owned by Thomas Jefferson.

Let me teach you, as my Muslim friends and much life experience and study have taught me.

We'll start with King's complaint...that somehow Somalis will worry about the souls of their employers' customers? Sorry, but that's just plain ridiculous. Unless you go to a Muslim country that's not very diverse, like the Maldives, or one where a Fundamentalist interpretation of Islam is the law of the State, like Saudi Arabia...no one is going to force a Halal diet on you. There are varying degrees of practice and levels of piety even in a Fundamentalist nut-house like Saudi.

Here's a pro tip, too. You can get beer, or weed, or whatever you want in Saudi Arabia too. It's just a matter of knowing the right people and having enough money. Friends and social class are everything here...in fact members of the Saudi Royal Family are infamous for their alcohol and drug-fueled parties. Just like police everywhere else, the Saudi Department of Public Safety has a drug unit. Just like police everywhere else, it's less likely to bother those who provide its equipment and sign its paychecks.

People like Steve King forget the obvious fact that people are people, and even in a country like Saudi where the penalty for a lot of things (even things that might not be a crime elsewhere) is death, people break the law. The Mutawa, the "religious" police (Saudi Arabia has both religious police and secular public safety officers) are just as often on the take as police in other countries. Many of their officers are actually recruited from prisons, because they became a Hafiz (memorized the Koran) while they were locked up. In point of fact, the Saudi Shura council (the governing body of Islamic clerics within Saudi Arabia) had to issue a Fatwa simply to get the Mutawa officers...of their own Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice...to obey traffic laws. I read this on the Al Jazeera website a few years ago and the comments section was hilarious and full of Saudi people making jokes at the expense of the Mutaween.

A couple of years ago, a Royal Saudi Air Force airman posted to Keesler Air Force Base for training got arrested for having sex with an underage boy while he was on vacation in Las Vegas. He was charged, tried, convicted and sent to a US Federal prison. When this happened, the airman was drunk. I bring this up not to point out some kind of evil, here, but to show that despite different countries and cultures, people are more the same than you'd think. If you ask anybody who's ever been to prison they'll usually back up my theory that if you take everything else away, there are three things people will still always try to do. Get high, have sex, or kill somebody.

Fundamentalist theocracies aren't that much different from prison, what religion they claim doesn't really matter. In countries like Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia, where rigid segregation of the sexes is enforced, a lot of premarital fucking around is situationally bisexual. In Afghanistan, for example, the customs are so deeply entrenched and unofficially tolerated that there are sayings about it. "Boys are for pleasure, women are for children" and such. I'm not saying it's right..it's just how it is over there and only those people are ever really going to be able to change it.

Afghanistan also...and especially thanks to the War on Terror...has a drug problem that makes our Opioid crisis look like a couple teenage girls smoking a joint on the weekend. It's not just in terms of growing and selling Hashish and Opium as cash crops either. Lots of people use. Friends and several relatives of mine served over there, and they all said the same thing...that the NATO & US troops were the only ones who weren't lit up as fuck, even while on duty sometimes. Oh, and the oh-so-righteous Taliban are some of the worst ones in this regard...and there's a reason pious Muslims don't want their sons joining the Taliban that (if you've been paying attention) has nothing to do with that they might get killed.

I'm not saying these people are evil, I'm not saying they're righteous either. What I'm saying is, they're people. A lot of these guys have been fighting for their whole lives. An 18-year old kid who joined the Mujahideen in the early 1980's to fight the Soviets with nothing more than an AK-47, his own guts, some improvised explosives and a few years later our FIM-92 Stinger Missiles...if he survived, often fighting both the Soviets and then later the Americans...is today a 50 year old man who, if he was lucky, was able to marry and have kids...and now his sons are fighting too, whether against us or against the Daesh, they fight...especially if they are Pashtuns steeped in tribal ethos of honor, hospitality, and revenge.

But understand one thing, even an illiterate Pashtun who fights for the Taliban might know who Snoop Dogg is, and have heard his music. He certainly understands sophisticated insurgent tactics and how to use the lay of the land to his advantage. If that Taliban fighter has a son, his son might just dream of coming to America and being a doctor. Never assume that someone is stupid just because they don't meet your cultural benchmarks.

The Taliban have been smart enough to tie the vaunted US Army in knots. The Afghans who are theoretically on our side have been shrewd enough to set up their end of a supply pipeline that floods our country with cheap heroin...and the areas most affected by the Opioid crisis correlate closely with the ones whose people supported (or continue to support) Donald Trump.

Afghanistan is called the graveyard of empires for a damn reason.

And we were dumb enough to invade this country? Not only that but we did so in the service of goals and ideals that those people can barely understand and care about even less. But while you're at it, understand one thing. If we packed up our shit and left tomorrow most of those people would never even think about us again.

Somalia is much the same, actually probably worse off. That country hasn't had an effective government since 1991. In point of fact, it was the Islamists of the Islamic Courts Union that came the closest to providing the kinds of basic services or law and order that even the poorest White Americans in Kentucky and West Virginia can absolutely take for granted. In fact, while white Americans might resent that lawful authority, and try to keep it pointed at somebody else, Somalis treasure it. Why? Because they've seen the alternative. In Minnesota, where the largest Somali-American community is located, the Somali Community is represented in the state legislature by the first Somali-American elected official, a woman named Ilhan Omar...a Democrat. The state's Republican Party has a Somali at the head of its immigrant relations group. Somalis serve disproportionately in the Air & Army National Guards, and in the police force. If the Republicans would get their head out of their ass they'd see that these people would be a natural constituency, in fact probably an ideal one.

But of course they won't because Somalis are Black.

The only big business in Somalia is Piracy.

Americans love their guns, and the idea of conflict and war (though not the actuality of it.) But imagine, if you will, having nothing, living in a country where $1,000 means you can live like a king, imagine looking out over the ocean and seeing passing international shipping. Imagine having nothing but an AK-47, a small boat and your own guts and sailing the wine-dark sea to try and break off a piece of all that free trade and global society and international order for yourself...so you can eat. Then, imagine having to take on a United States Navy Arleigh Burke-class Guided Missile Destroyer to get it. Imagine having to fight a seagoing insurgency against all that firepower and technology with just a dozen guys carrying Kalashnikovs. People do it, and they do it gladly.

Imagine being a young, intrepid Somali dude, on a speedboat with a rifle in your hands, the salt spray of the sea in your face, out to capture a container ship or some rich guy's yacht and ransom the crew. Out there, over the horizon, and on your mother-ship's radar screen, is big money, a life. All the girls want the pirates, maybe you're there because you want adventure, maybe you're there because the only marketable skill you have is driving a boat or shooting and you just want to eat. But either way, to get it...you only have to get past half the world's navies. There's always the possibility that some US Navy Fire-Controlman or Russian Matros will see your boat, or its mother-ship on radar, that orders will be given and keys turned and that from 100 kilometers away (or more) somebody will kill you.

If you get caught and survive, if you're lucky you'll go to prison in the EU, the UK or the US. Those less lucky end up in Kenyan prisons or Russian Gulags. but still, despite this literal ocean of risk, the young men sign on, they do so gladly. Imagine facing down all that shit, and deciding to go to sea anyway. Now imagine doing so because you have to eat.

I'm not saying they're good, I'm not saying they're evil. I'm saying they're people, with people's needs and kids and families and shit, just trying to get by like everybody else...but dealt a worse hand than most. If the only way to make the leap from poverty to adequacy was piracy, I'd take it, wouldn't you? Why is it always somehow different when it's a person of Color having to make that call?

One of my Muslim friends had a theory back in the day that Americans hate Islam because it requires charity and rejects racism on a scriptural level (even though many Muslims do not follow this) and because Muslims are less likely to drink or smoke or do drugs and therefore harder for those with much money to control and manipulate.

When I told that same guy that Donald Trump said he didn't need God's forgiveness...he didn't believe me at first. When I showed him the video clip he lost his cool and replied "He really said that? Wow, what a bitch!"

That guy had, and still has, as his E-mail signature "The shortest distance between a problem and its solution is the distance between your knees and the floor. The person who kneels before God can stand up to anything."

As a lapsed Christian whose faith was in crisis at the time I found that to be powerful advice. This Muslim dude and his friends did far more to help me than any Christians I knew at the time. The Christians mostly just wanted to take advantage.

The truth..the point...is this: Muslims are each and every one different, just like Christians. It's not your religion that matters, it's what you do with it. Muslims don't hate America, may of them are Americans. 1.6% of American citizens are Muslim. Many of them were born here, still more come here and gladly sign on to the idea of being an American and undergo the Naturalization process and have, or one day will, raise their right hand and swear before God and Man that they will be faithful citizens of the United States...and make no mistake about that, either, Allah is simply the Arabic word for "God."

Now tell me something, honestly. If you were in the shoes of that young Somali dude and you have the choice between dealing with all this crazy shit that I just spoke about, or coming to America and living a simple life in a simple town in Iowa, and working as a chicken plucker and signing on to this mundane American life, which would you pick?

There are dark and dangerous places in the world. I know this. I've seen a few of them. We are blessed here in America, even though men like Donald Trump and Steve King want to make America more like one of those dark and dangerous places, they will fail.

Why?

Trump and his Republicans will fail for the same reason that American and Soviet armies could not subjugate Afghanistan, for the same reason that half the world's navies cannot keep Somali pirates from sailing the wine-dark sea, and for the same reason that all the Imams in Mecca can't keep a Saudi dude from getting laid.

It is human nature to resist. It is human nature to want to be free. For all our different cultural or religious definitions of freedom, we all want to have it. We all have the right to claim it. All people are very much the same. It's not the religion that matters, it's not the color of your skin, it's what you do with all that. People have intrinsic value, and inalienable rights. America was founded on the idea that people could come here and be not what they were born...but what they have it in themselves to be.

And that's true whether you pray to Allah or to Christ or to something else.

Now, imagine believing in something even greater. Imagine believing in a nation whose founding document rejected gods, and whose ethos of advancing liberty eventually swore to welcome all.

Now imagine being small and weak enough to want to tear that down, and do it for money and prejudice and shitty ideologies and forbidden allegiances to foreign despots.

Fuck you, Steve.

No country for young men.

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.~Lee Greenwood

Over the weekend, and especially today, anything remotely to do with social media has been aflame with condemnation of the Trump administration's policy of separating undocumented immigrant kids from their parents, and rightly so. All 49 Senate Democrats have signed on to a bill aimed at prohibiting the practice, and as the snipped Tweet above shows, even many Republicans are...as they God-damned well should be...coming out against this practice.

Now, whether this is just plain racist bullshit, or some kind of bargaining chip in some bullshit political fight...it should not be tolerated. I think anybody who has anything to do with it should be fired and brought up on charges of child abuse, in addition to whatever else can be thrown at them, because this bullshit is not only immoral, it's illegal under international law. More to the point...if this IS some kind of "bargaining chip" that shit needs to be slapped down hard. Look, I'm of Scandinavian heritage. The Vikings are part of my genetics. I'm here to tell you, once one pays Danegeld, one *Never* gets rid of the Dane. If Congress caves to this hellish bullshit, you can bet that little InCel sadists like Stephen Miller and Meth-fueled masturbators like Steve Bannon and washed-up old men like John Kelly will be getting wood over what kind of petty cruelties they can inflict upon the undeserving to score political points and wring otherwise-undreamed-of political concessions out of Congress.

Also, speaking of Nazis, let's get one thing out of the way straight up. When people like Stephen Miller or Steve Bannon use words like "Culture" they're not trying to protect Apple Pie, Backyard Barbecues, Mom, or anything like that. Unless you look at it from the perspective of they're trying to get rid of Mom's new black boyfriend or the family members he has over for barbecues or the Mexican neighbor who brought over the apple pie or the Dominican and Mexican kids that are playing baseball in the vacant lot across the street. What These Fucking People are trying to protect is their racism and their right to be racist assholes and don't you forget it.

Meanwhile, these fucking people can't even take responsibility for their own shitty thought process. Here we have Roseanne ranting about "Leftist mind control." Bitch, if Democrats or Leftists could control your mind you might actually be a decent person and still have your stupid TV show and maybe your name might not be synonymous with "Making a fool of oneself on Social Media as performance art." Hell, maybe you wouldn't have changed all that much from back when YOU used to be a radical Leftist and ran for President on the Green Party ticket with Jill Stein as your running mate. Remember that one? I sure do, and I thought it was ridiculous. I'd personally suggest you try something other than woo woo bullshit for once. Don't you ever get tired of looking like an idiot?

I keep seeing these shirts at Wal-Mart (and I saw somebody wearing one today) that feature a Bald Eagle wearing sunglasses and they say "I can't hear you over the sound of my FREEDOM." (Freedom to do what, exactly?) And then in smaller letters further down "Make America Great Again" So, I'd have to assume the shirts either have something to do with Trump or at least somebody trying to make money off of him. I wonder if this is what they mean? Freedom to run over a peaceful protester in the street for no reason. These people don't give a shit about your freedom, or your rights. In fact in their zero-sum white trash minds, the fact that you have your freedom means that they don't have theirs, never mind that the actual laws of our actual country protect both you and them. Trickle-down economics has apparently been replaced by Trickle-down basic human rights, and these idiots think they're gonna be the next generation of Super-rich. They see other people having agency and human rights as an attack upon their own. Never mind that these people apparently don't believe in human rights.

As their Nationalist Anthem suggests, the only privilege or rights that they really care about are that they were born here. "Here" by the way somehow manages not to include big cities, liberal states, also Alaska, Guam, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. "People who were born here" doesn't include Christians who aren't Fundamentalist Nuts, LGBT people, liberals, Nancy Pelosi, People of Color, people who actually care about the Environment, Veterans who don't tow the right-wing political line or anything else that isn't fetishized by conservatives...or whatever passes for them today. It may however, include in an honorary capacity people like Kim Jong Un, Moammar Gaddafi, Saddam Hussein or Vladimir Putin. North Korea is, in these fucking people's eyes, somehow more American than Chicago.

There's hope, though. A lot of people, both Democrats and Republicans, are openly speculating that Trump has finally gone too far, and polling seems to bear that out. As I've said many times at this point, the key here is that you have to show up and vote, and you have to vote for the party most likely to be able to stop whatever it is that you have a problem with. So, in this case, that would be the Democrats. It kind of IS a "Like it or lump it" sort of thing, and at this point, either you support basic human rights and human worth or you don't. It's really just that simple.

Why do I say that?

I love ya, Max, I really do. But the answer to your question is "No." There is nothing that the Dear Orange Leader does that the Trump Cult Of Personality Party will not support. That is exactly why in the next two election cycles, they have to be voted out of power, completely and at all levels. Please, keep in mind that this dude is a conservative, and not just a conservative but a pretty no-shit conservative academic. I actually own a couple of his books.
Of course, he lost them at "Academic" and it all went downhill from there. Conservatism is now defined as "Whatever Donald Trump says it is" and the precise reason for that is that Trump's followers and a large majority of conservative voters generally haven't had any serious grounding in academic disciplines or conservative philosophy in at least 24 years, quite possibly longer. I blame people like Newt Gingrich for that. When you can't even have a conversation with somebody on the other side, that's not actually a sign that you believe in the words that come out of your mouth when you're talking about political beliefs. What that means is, even you figure that your shit can't stand up to criticism and that's where these people have been at for nearly an entire generation. You can't argue with that, you can only vote that kind of shit out of power...and then never give it control again.

You cannot reason with willfully unreasonable people.

As a case in point, this dude here recently attended a conservative women's conference and while I intend to use the majority of his thread as the basis for a future essay, this part came to mind: The conservative obsession with people like David Hogg...as expressed by Tomi Lahren. If you think these people, with their bitching about dumb shits eating Tide Pods as if it were something done by more than a few Internet Idiots, will stop at imprisoning Latino immigrant kids for no reason...you have another thing coming. These Fucking People stopped understanding the world...or even trying to...at least a decade ago and now they're finding themselves surrounded by a changing world they no longer understand and have-endlessly egged on by Fox News-become desperately afraid of. The fact that a large number of young people...some of whom actually have been shot at...are refusing to take up their phallic worship of the Gun scares the shit out of them. Of course, the fact that large numbers of older people...people like me for instance...never signed onto such in the first place even though we have guns, well that scares the shit out of them too. In point of fact I think it's shorter to list the things that these people aren't afraid of than the things that they are afraid of.

I honestly don't know how people can live like that. But then, if the number of gun-related suicides and Opioid overdose deaths is taken into consideration...I think a lot of them can't. But they can't seem to accept or deal with change, either.

I started out as a conservative, but I guess I was just taught a different vision of the world.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
MOTHER OF EXILES. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

~Emma Lazarus

I like that one better.

Let's vote these bastards out, shall we?  Let's do it while we still can.

Mystery Republican The Great

And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
And upon her forehead was a name written, Mystery, Babylon The Great, The Mother Of Harlots And Abominations Of The Earth.
And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.
~Revelation 17:1-6
Last night at work, I saw that Ronna Romney-McDaniel, the head of the Republican National Committee, has basically been reduced to threatening people on Twitter. So hey, uh, Ronna? I can call you Ronna, right? How's that whole #MAGA thing working out? I'm guessing not well, if you're having to try to threaten people (and sucking at it that badly) and assuming you know that most of the people who'll read it are probably Republicans. I think that says a lot of things about your party that you might just not want to admit in public right now, what with an election coming up and all. But whatever. I do have to admit I've been pretty impressed with the fact that a lot of the conservatives I follow on Twitter, people like Bill Kristol, Rick Wilson, Sarah Rumpf and Steve Schmidt, have dog-piled on you in much more epic fashion than I ever could.
Let's just get one thing outta the way right now; You're pathetic.
I've said it before and I'll say it again as many times as I need to. Political control does not equal leadership, Trump has no leadership skills, I'm guessing you don't either, and ya'll are surprised things are going the way they are? Fuck you.
Then, a few minutes after I saw your Tweet, I saw this:
Here we have US President Donald J. Trump, Mr. #MAGA himself, America First-ranter extraordinaire, God-Emperor, the Hero of Hill 69 who did not get the clap, Holder of Hitler's hat while he takes a leak, Ravisher of Porn Stars, Swamp-Drainius Maximus, The Colossus of Mar-A-Lago and Patient Zero for Bangkok Fire-Dick, saluting a North Korean Army General?!?!
Have you people lost your God-Damned minds?
Leaving aside that the President is a civilian and should not be saluting any military member, foreign or domestic, I'm curious, why in the hell does the President, the ultimate representative of America, keep feeling compelled to suck up to dictators like he's some kind of two-bit toady to the playground bully of Andrew Jackson Elementary School?
Go ahead and think about your answer. Take all the time you need, I'll wait.
So then, I got to thinking. How in the hell did this happen?
Well, on the one hand if you go far enough back there's McCarthyism, Racism, the Red Scare, the Southern Strategy, and all that, like it or not that's baked into the DNA of certain elements of the Right and there's nothing ya'll can really do about it except educate yourself and try to fight against those tendencies and your own biases just like the rest of us.
But, more medium-term and falling within my own adult lifespan, I think there's both more and less to it than that.
There are of course, conspiracy theories, those modern mystery cults which claim all sorts of secret knowledge for the greater glory of their believers, and of course Alex Jones. For those who don't know, Greek/Roman mythology (and most of the rest of the ancient world) postulated a cosmological world-view in which only the truly wicked went to hell, but also only the truly virtuous went to heaven. Most people, when they died, were understood to go to the Underworld, which while not terrible, was not greatly desirable either.
Needless to say, the Roman Empire especially in the First Century was rife with mystery-cults, each claiming to know this formula or that secret that would enable the holders of the super-secret knowledge to transcend the Underworld and spend eternity getting turned into a goat and repeatedly corn-holed by Zeus or caught up in the manipulations of Hera or most definitely not getting Athenian Fire-Dick from Aphrodite, or what the fuck ever. I don't know. The point is, these cults were a theological shortcut for those who didn't want to do the work of living a virtuous life  Instead they'd feel all important with their rituals and their secret decoder rings and their super-secret knowledge...what happened after death, who knows. I suspect the various and assorted deities of their time and place (which varied considerably throughout the Empire) probably were not stupid enough to fall for that crap.
It's much the same with conspiracy theories. For the record, it's a rare Evangelical or Fundamentalist these days who doesn't buy into conspiracy garbage on some level.
Then of course, there's the reality TV shows, I blame stuff like Jackass and Survivor for normalizing dumb shit and selfishness, and it just went downhill from there. (Throw in years of talk of Obama being the Antichrist and now you've got Republicans who seem to think Trump is The Savior. I don't think this is gonna work out the way they think it will.
I was a conservative (non-Fundamentalist) Christian at the time and I remember seeing my first episode of Survivor and thinking, my God, what in the hell kind of ridiculous nastiness is this?
My Pentecostal ex-wife however, was hooked. Being the Man, I simply forbade anyone from watching that kind of ungodly ridiculous shit in my house...and so far as I can tell, technically it stuck.
How do I know this? My wife would go over to her sister's house on Tuesday nights and watch Survivor. She always denied it, but I knew.
A year or so after we split up my ex's sister confirmed to me that I was, in point of fact, right.
A lot of things about my ex-wife got worse because of that show.
Of course, Donald Trump came out of the reality show genre with a dumb-ass side-trip into professional wrestling.
...And never forget that it's generally a good idea to look at anything Trump does in terms of professional wrestling. None of it is real, it's all crap, but idiots think it's entertaining.
The fact that the voters forgot this pisses me off. The fact that leadership and senior figures like Ronna McDaniel forgot it is inexcusable.
When the shit hits the fan, Republicans are going to pay the consequences.
Never forget what the Whore of Babylon actually represents, nor what happens to her in the end.
The "Whore" was always, at least when I followed and studied this stuff, taken to mean Rome.
America is the Rome of our current age.
I've been saying this for 15 years.
Something is coming, and soon. Democrats are primed for a Blue Wave, Republicans are ranting about civil war and unspecified retribution. Historically, the more fact-based and persistent side will win, because war and other conflicts are generally all about the willpower.
Ronna, I hate to break it to you, but you're going to lose. To a great extent you've lost already.
Conservatives can't even control themselves or keep their own followers in line without threats. How do they expect to run the country?
Justice or Karma or whatever you want to call it is in the process of swinging back around.
Don't say you weren't warned.

And they cried with a loud voice...

And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held:
And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?
And white robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest yet for a little season, until their fellow-servants also and their brethren, that should be killed as they were, should be fulfilled. ~Revelation 6:9-11

I had to work last night, in the employee dining dish area at work.

This gave me a full view of several of the break room  This gave me a full view of several of the break room TV's and it was a slow night. The news was full of the (per the time difference, Singapore being a full 12 hours ahead of US EST) then-ongoing Singapore "Summit." In which, as I understand it, Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un briefly met, signed an "unspecified" document, snubbed the White House press corps and not much else. In return for vague promises of Denuclearization, Trump canceled joint military exercises between the United States Armed Forces and the Republic of Korea Armed Forces, without notifying either the Pentagon or the South Koreans first.

Seriously?

I set a land-speed record to change the channel on the one TV from Fox News to CNN, only to find that CNN wasn't any better. Seriously, media, Trump and his supporters fucking hate you. Stop being so desperate to credit this asshole with something when you know that if the shoe was on the other foot, he never would.

I've spend the whole day angrily simmering and watching hordes of Trumpers, like the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz, dog-pile on anybody on Twitter who questions Trump their god and his supposed achievement from this dog & pony show photo op fake ass "Summit."

In all of this there was not one damned word about human rights violations by the North Korean government.

I didn't make a point of going and looking, but I imagine a lot of these Trump people doing this would identify as Evangelical Christians. Granted it's been my personal observation that almost every last one of them believes in Trump more than they believe in Christ.

Oh, did I mention that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (Orwellian phrasing if there ever was) is literally the worst nation in the world in terms of its persecution of Christians?

In the article that I chose to use those words as a link for, the writer describes a New York Times interview of four female North Korean defectors in which one of the women says "If the government found out I was reading the Bible, I'd be dead."

Think about that for a second.

Let me tell you a little secret: I, along with everybody else in my Baptist church Men's Group back in the 1990's donated to Voice of the Martyrs. We had one of those little maps they send you on the wall in the church basement. Yeah, pretty much the same as the one in the header photo.

North Korea always figured prominently in their literature. I remember reading about how some North Korean Christians built themselves a tunnel complex, and the North Korean Army literally bombed it. When they captured some of the survivors, these people were run over with a steamroller in the name of "Suppressing superstition."

I have not heard one God-Damned word about North Korean Christians from the Evangelicals, or the Trump Supporters, let alone from Trump himself...

Remember how last week, Fox News claimed a still photo of the Philadelphia Eagles players praying was the players taking a knee in protest?

I'm a tell it like it is, Christians, Trump and his supporters don't give a shit about you, and they damned sure don't give a shit about the Christianity of any person who isn't a white (presumably male) American conservative. The North Korean Christians we used to read the horror stories about? They might as well not exist as far as the Trumpanzees are concerned.

When people like Franklin Graham go on speaking tours like Frank's recent effort to "Win back California for Christ" (which I gather isn't going that well) they're not talking about preaching to the masses or spreading the Word. They're talking about preaching to the choir to solidify a political ideology and motivate their base. American Evangelicalism isn't about Jesus, at least not anymore. What it's about is the Republican Party and selling their souls for a few more right-wing judges.

Just as modern, libertarian-influenced Republicanism doesn't give a shit about Democracy or any of the original conservative values that were in place even ten years ago, modern Evangelicalism doesn't give two shits about Jesus Christ or even about its own claimed core values.

Christians in other parts of the world...or at least those who don't jack off the Trumpers' extreme authoritarianism hard-ons like some weird ideas I've seen these people have about the Russians...just don't count. They want Christians to be rulers and kings. The truth is, historically Christians...most especially Christians of Color...spend an awful lot of time under the jackboots of tyranny rather than being the tyrants. An awful lot of the time Christians persecute other Christians, too. As in the case of Russians and pro-Putin Ukraine rebels persecuting Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians and even other Russian Orthodox believers in the parts of the Ukraine that they've conquered.

Just remember, if you're a Christian, you could be next and the rising tide of Evangelical indifference will be exceeded only by their ecstatic worship of Donald Trump.

But then who needs faith, hope and love when you can have some new hotels, right?

Here's the thing, Don. Nobody in North Korea who isn't a member of the Kim family in good standing has any money. I realize you'd rather bro down with dictators than have a lick of common sense, and I realize you're an idiot, but come on, dude. This shit is ridiculous even for you.

Fucking moron.

I'm just gonna leave this here so us well-fed Americans can sit back and think about it for a minute. Yeah, you. Go ahead, I'll wait.

I think the North Koreans would rather have some sandwiches or maybe even a few of the cats out of my trailer park than some damn shit-hole Trump hotels. Have to wonder, if North Korea gets Trump hotels and they go under, will Scott Pruitt still want the mattresses?

Yes, I will make all the inappropriate bad jokes I want and you can't stop me. It's my blog.

Oh, and let's not forget how Trump said that Kim Jong Un "Loved his country" and the people had "Zeal" for him?

Most people, if given the choice between zeal and death, no matter how fake the zeal has to be they're gonna choose it.

Tea Party Joe Walsh, ladies and gentlemen. Let me tell you, it's one more reason that I hate Trump, that I'm forced to agree with this dude on a daily basis.

At this point I'd rather have HIM back in Congress than all these Trump suck-ups that are running...and don't you forget it.

I'll hate myself for having said that later, I'm sure, but right now it's the fucking truth. A man specifically known for being a terrible person has more of a heart than the President does, and don't you forget that, either.

Think about that, take all the time you need.

Trump's mood toward Kim has been described as warm and aspirational. Think about that, too.

Think about the fact that we have fascists in America again, actual fucking Nazis...who long to terrorize whoever they can, for any or no reason.

Think about that in the context of the worst human-rights record on the planet.

Think about that in the context of the Evangelicals and their blind acceptance of it all.

Vote, like your life depends on it...because at this point it probably does especially if you or anybody you care about has to have health insurance or has any kind of medical condition.

If we don't stop this shit with ballots, it's going to come down to bullets, it's going to have to.

If we don't stop it, literally anything is permissible just so whoever is doing it has enough anti-liberal sentiments and interest in performative cruelty.

Allies, democracy, free trade, goods that the average...or even a poor person can afford, health insurance, old-age pensions, the basic standards of living that most Americans expect and demand from each other, their employers and the State...

It's all up for grabs and that motherfucker sure as shit doesn't care what the rest of the world...or even the rest of this country...thinks.

In point of fact, Trump views more than half of America as his enemy. If you don't surrender totally...and yes...it will come down to Christianity being viewed as a threat because it gives people something to believe in or a platform for political and social organization that doesn't revolve around the State and Trump.

All you people that wanted to "Burn it all down?"

Well, Trump wants to burn it down more than you do, 'Tis better to reign in hell' and all that. Not that I'd expect he'd know where the quote comes from, and he's President.

This is what the Republican Party has come to. This is what they stand for, shitty Libertarian Unicorn bullshit, racism, tax cuts and Donald Fucking Trump. Today's Republican Party cares more about supporting dictators and planning expensive hotels in a country where people literally have to eat grass than they do about having a functioning fucking government right here at home. While we're at it, today's Republicans view Canada and France and the UK, not to mention California and Chicago, more as enemies than the most murderous fucking dictator on the planet. It's worth remembering that people like Jeff Flake and John McCain were only too happy to enable that bullshit...and CNN was only too happy to put it on TV...before it became an embarrassment and threatened to start costing everybody too much money. This is your party, Jeff, and sooner or later you're going to have to own that shit.

Now, we can keep talking, or we can do something about this bullshit.

Frankly I think we owe it to ourselves, to future generations, to American school kids and Latino immigrant kids and to North Korean Christians Syrian Muslim refugees and to our society and the global civilization that sustains us all to start doing better than this, America. Stop putting up with this bullshit. Stop going along to get along and stop putting up with idiocy when we see it.

You know what every immigrant and naturalized citizen I've ever met has always done, up to and including people in my own family?

Vote.

Participate in your society and the world around you.

Stand up, when standing up needs to be done.

If you want a better nation, you have to be a better citizen.

If you want change, you may have to change too.

Do what has to be done, because if we don't there's a good chance we're dead.

...

I'd like to take a minute to dedicate this post to an old man I knew named Ernie Trim, a retired General Motors union worker, staunch Union Democrat, and Korean War veteran who rose to the rank of Sergeant while serving in the United States Army. He never spoke much about the war, but in 20+ years of knowing the man before he died, I almost never saw him without his Korean War Veteran hat on.

Dude survived, and we can too.

He didn't speak much about it, but you could tell he was proud do have been there and done that.

We can all be that guy, in 20 or 30 years when we finally dig ourselves out of this mess.

But you have to show up and you have to fight back. It's not easy and it's not glorious.

But it's still gotta be done, yo.

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

This ain't it.

Fiery the Angels fell...

Fiery the angels fell; deep thunder rolled around their shores; burning with the fires of Orc. ~Roy Batty, Blade Runner (A deliberate misquote of William Blake's "America: A Prophecy.)

There's this old Loony Tunes cartoon where Bugs Bunny (taking his usual wrong turns) ends up in Transylvania and stays at this big scary castle, where the Vampire, Count Blood-count, spends the night trying to attack him. Bugs defends himself primarily by finding and using a book of "Magic words and phrases." Once that happens, most of the rest of the cartoon is Bugs and the Count spouting magic words at each other while trying to beat or crush one another in various ways...a contest Bugs handily wins before he accidentally changes his ears into bat wings and decides to fly home.

I saw this picture on Twitter last Friday, and I've seen it several times since.

It seems to me, like Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians are still desperately trying to convince themselves that Donald Trump is religious...in fact, not just religious, but one of their own. This is becoming farcical. It's like these people are trying to bullshit God, themselves, and of course even Trump himself into believing that this fantasy is true. These people desperately want to see Trump the way they see themselves...holy, reverent, religious, serious individuals...but of course most of these people are none of these things and their leader isn't either so the whole damned lot of them just ends up looking ridiculous. They don't know the words to the Nicene Creed...so what do we get? Magic Words and Phrases. You know, I can't even imagine junking up a car like that, least of all for Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, their favorite news outlet is taking all sorts of liberties with photos of Philadelphia Eagles football players actually praying during the pregame activities and trying to claim that they were kneeling to protest police brutality (as if such would be a bad thing if they were?) The truth is that not one single Eagles player knelt in protest last season. I'm not sure why that is, or whether it was a mutual agreement or just sort of happened that way...but at the end of the day it comes down to the fact that most of the players didn't want to go to the White House, so here Fox News and Trump have spent the day lying about it every chance they get. Of course, this just shows that Fox News, Trump, and all too many of today's "Conservatives" more generally don't give a damn about any of the things they say they care about. If they did, they wouldn't be doing their level best to defame a team that's apparently pretty well full up with Christian men. You'd think all these Conservative Christians would be all about that team, right? Nope. You'd be wrong.

Granted, as I've seen myself and as any Person of Color can tell you...these fucking people don't give a damn about the Christianity of any "Others" outside of their group. These people and their ancestors before them have put considerable effort into dismissing the Christianity, indeed the human validity, of all those other people. Whiteness, and hard-right political conservatism, of course, are central to this kind of Christianity...not just central to it, but in fact these seem to be overwhelming all other aspects. They take the Cross of Christ and change it from a symbol of hope and justice and salvation for all of humanity...to a tribal Tiki at the edge of the camp...and the message is plain...if you're not part of this tribe, stay out

To the Trumpservatives and the Trumpvangelicals, America isn't America if Black people, Brown people, Jews, LGBT people, Liberals, Muslims, veterans who don't fit their stereotypes, etc. etc. etc. etc. get any. Heaven isn't heaven unless they're the only ones who get to go. You know, honestly, I really want to spend at least part of the Afterlife raining on these people's parade every chance I get. But then that would mean I would have to deal with them, so fuck that.

Meanwhile, while these idiots dance around the fire, their Witch Doctor comes out of his cave and spouts bullshit like this:

Like my friend Aaron said (and I agree with him, I said it on Sunday myself) these Trump people, much like Sovereign Citizens, seem to think that if they happen upon the right combination of magic words and phrases and do all the right things that they'll be free from laws and Something Something Gazpacho and can do whatever they want.

Sorry, but I have enough of an understanding of reality that I know it just doesn't work that way.

Then of course there's that other Elephant in the room. Seriously, does any of this seem Christian to you? Really?

If it does...then I say with certainty, that conservative American Protestant Christianity needs to die. Let its mantle pass to the Catholics and the mainstream liberal denominations and the Mormons. Let the Jews and the Muslims and the Hindus and the Sikhs and every other faith we have in this country expand to fill the void. I don't care. I keep waiting for these people to explode into ecstatic worship of Donald Trump at this point. I think just like he's trying (and failing) to declare himself above the law, so too are his followers one or two major crises away from arbitrarily declaring that Donald Trump is God and does not have to obey human laws.

These people...these so-called "Christians" don't want a poor Savior born in a stable who worked as a carpenter and itinerant Rabbi and who preached Spiritual Truth only to be crucified and buried in a donated tomb...though He did not stay there. They don't want to believe. They'd be fine in a few years here with a gilded mausoleum with their deceased Dear Orange Leader pickled and stuffed like Vladimir Lenin just because it'd be something they can see. They don't care about spiritual truth and faith being the evidence of things unseen, when they can have their biases confirmed and their petty hatreds and resentments validated like cheap Opioid prescriptions. This is what happens when Sin becomes something that other people do.

It works out the same way every single time.

If this is what American Christianity has come to then it needs to die.

Soon.

Before it's not religion but hate that becomes the Opiate of the People and this crazy bullshit kills us all.

You think these people have been terrible while they believed in their White Jesus? Even that kind of Christianity still has some hard limits...

...Just wait until they get somebody they don't have to believe in, who tells them what they wanna hear every time.

But that's why this country was not founded on Gods or Kings, but as a secular nation of citizens who voted for their leaders and various other priorities that they desired to see put into action.

You know what Gods...or at least those who would speak for them...and kings alike fear?

An educated, informed, motivated citizenry that shows up to vote.

You have that power. Use it.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die. ~Roy Batty, Blade Runner.

Part Two.
