Takbir! (October Unsurprising, Six.)

The martyrs of history were not fools, and our honored dead who gave their lives to stop the advance of the Nazis didn't die in vain. Where, then, is the road to peace? Well, it's a simple answer after all. You and I have the courage to say to our enemies, "There is a price we will not pay." There is a point beyond which they must not advance. This is the meaning in the phrase of Barry Goldwater's "peace through strength." Winston Churchill said that "the destiny of man is not measured by material computation. When great forces are on the move in the world, we learn we are spirits — not animals." And he said, "There is something going on in time and space, and beyond time and space, which, whether we like it or not, spells duty. ~Ronald Reagan

Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows. ~George Orwell, 1984.

...

My black face fades,
hiding inside the black granite.
I said I wouldn't
dammit: No tears.
I'm stone. I'm flesh.
My clouded reflection eyes me
like a bird of prey, the profile of night slanted against morning.

I turn this way—the stone lets me go.
I turn that way—I'm inside
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial
again, depending on the light
to make a difference.
I go down the 58,022 names,
half-expecting to find
my own in letters like smoke.

I touch the name Andrew Johnson; I see the booby trap's white flash.
Names shimmer on a woman's blouse
but when she walks away
the names stay on the wall.
Brushstrokes flash, a red bird's
wings cutting across my stare.
The sky. A plane in the sky.
A white vet's image floats
closer to me, then his pale eyes
look through mine. I'm a window.
He's lost his right arm
inside the stone. In the black mirror
a woman’s trying to erase names:
No, she's brushing a boy's hair.

I saw this last night.

Arizona is ramping up election security, with bulletproof glass, fences, FBI agents and snipers, like something straight out of the Iraq War for fuck's sake.

But this is in America.

And it's only happening because Donald Trump has been lying about elections and pushing fascism and racism since 2020.

I served in the United States Air Force as a Security Policeman. I didn't go to war, thank Jesus...but I did serve as a peacekeeper in Bosnia when they were just starting to pull bones out of the cold ground. I was deployed on operations like Southern Watch, trying to contain the evil that was Saddam Hussein. I saw the wreckage of war, then still prevalent, on the ground in Kuwait while briefly forward-based there. Several years later, a few of my bros went to Afghanistan and Iraq. I've seen enough.

Nobody with a goddamned brain in their head wants that shit here, except Republicans, who have not one brain among them.

This crap needs to stop before somebody does something really fucking stupid and starts shit that fucks everything up for everybody.

Like, seriously, despite the media's, pollsters' and Republicans efforts to magic a second Trump presidency into being for clicks, likes and personal agendas and power...not to mention the tax cuts, the
majority of the population doesn't appear to be even renting this shit, much less buying it. So, Republicans are already working on a grievance narrative and justifications for trying to start some kind of bullshit right-wing insurgency.

Oh, don't get me wrong, they'll try for a full-on Civil War in Trump's name...but I'm willing to put money on it at this point that they won't find enough people on their side who are the right combination of fit enough, mentally tough enough or physically competent...much less willing to learn anything, which is probably the most important part. These assholes think it's all guns and macho bullshit, want to guess how many Taliban thought that and got blown up by a drone-launched AGM-114 Hellfire cuz some skinny buzz-cut computer geek in ACU's sitting in an air-conditioned control center just...pushed a button?

But here's the thing, these motherfuckers don't care.

They try it, it'll be J6 but bigger.

In other words, a clown-show, gun-nut hard-ons so hyped up in the heat of the moment that they grab the wrong, uh...gun...instead of their rifle and go charging into battle with their pants around their ankles because NRA propaganda (among other things) fails to make much of a distinction between the two.

Their strategy, if you can call it that...like with the Russian Army in Ukraine...is likely to be pretty much The Walking Dead, human-wave assaults and some kind of shock tactics of the murder-somebody-with-a-barbed-wire-wrapped-baseball-bat variety, most likely. Unless they have direct support from the Russians (and that means war with Russia, too) it's unlikely that they'll have drones or massed fire missions of their own to back that up...so all this crap is gonna do is get a bunch of their own fucking people killed and inflict real bad PTSD on the people doing the killing.

They don't care.

They're already plotting to try and breed replacements. You go ahead and think about that shit for a second.

Their strategy, as it was with COVID-19, is simply to try to bury civilization under a big-enough pile of the dead.

And yes, that's exactly what this shit is.

Because if they can't destroy the State in favor of some bullshit Trump monarchy, or kill millions of people for kicks on the basis of petty bigotry, or trash our social fabric and turn women and girls into breeding stock while stealing any hope that anybody who isn't a billionaire might have some kind of a decent life or a future, these fucking people HATE America.

And they're going about trying to wreck this country in ways that are far more insidious than any Radical Islamist fanatic ever thought up, 'cause I guess even Jihadists have morals, or at least a few limits imposed by their religion.

Republicans, not so much.

And they're being pretty damn open about it, and about their desire to destroy an America that they hate...not to mention all the other people who live here, as if they think we'd all just line up and let them kill us?

And basically, if they have to trade the lives of a few million of their supporters for nothing more than some shitty banana republic in South Florida, Republicans will be fine with that.

Just so they get to use Mar-a-Lago for a presidential palace, because it's a fucking cult.

Yeah, you go ahead and consider that.

And consider what "Own The Libs" not to mention placate the Internet Fanatics would look like as a governing ideal...not to mention handing religious life over to the fundamentalist medieval Catholics.

Yeah, their first order of business would be an Inquisistion.

And what was the big topic of conversation overnight??

At one of his bullshit-ass rallies, this one in Pennsylvania, Trump got to talking stupid and started talking about Arnold Palmer's dick. Seriously?

I've suspected Trump wasn't exactly arrow-straight since long before he ever got into politics. While I'm at it, I first thought that as a Republican. There was a time, believe it or not, when if nothing else was the goddamned end of it, talking about another man's penis in the sort of way that Trump was doing would damned well have been the end of it. (I should note that more than one so-disgraced Republican...Mark Foley comes to mind...has aligned with Trump in an attempt to get themselves back into the game.)

I mean, whatever, if this crap helps peel off Republican voters who are tired of the donkey-show bullshit, great.

My point is, this garbage should have never gone this damned far.

We should not be bunkering off our polling places like we're trying to conduct an election in Iraq, and for damned sure not having to do that right here in America.

Radical Islamists in Afghanistan or Iraq or Syria who were shouting the Takbir and firing guns into the air and shit getting all hyped up for the Jihad...they're not the ones who did this bullshit to us.

We are, well, some of us anyway.

Republicans have done waged their own Jihad against America from the inside, literally trying to undo the American Revolution and turn this country into the things it was founded to oppose. There's a lot of Republicans that are damned well desperate to be Slaves Of The Caesars because they somehow think they'll get something for it.

And while some people have been aware and done their best to do something about this shit for a long time, it's really only in the last few months that Democrats have collectively started to even call these motherfuckers weird or punch back at all.

You wanna know why I'm all in for Kamala Harris? That's why.

At least she's made some effort to call out this horseshit!

People should have done woke the fuck up by now.

You either believe in freedom or you don't.

You're either willing to fight for it or you're not.

The time to be a better citizen is now.

So get after it.

Слава Україна!

"I didn't want to do it,'' he hears himself saying. "I didn't want to leave them behind.''

The void laughs at him. There are miles of empty air beneath his dangling feet. "You had no choice.''

"Yes I did! I didn't have to come here.'' He pauses. "I didn't have to do anything,'' he says quietly, and inhales another lungful of death. "It was all automatic. Maybe it was inevitable.''

"-- Evitable,'' echoes the distant horizon. Something dark and angular skims across the stars, like an echo of extinct pterosaurs. Turbofans whirring within its belly, the F-117A hunts on: patrolling to keep at bay the ancient evil, unaware that the battle is already lost. "Your family could still be alive, you know.''

He looks up. "They could?'' Andrea? Jason? "Alive?''

The void laughs again, unfriendly: "There is life eternal within the eater of souls. Nobody is ever forgotten or allowed to rest in peace. They populate the simulation spaces of its mind, exploring all the possible alternative endings to their life. There is a fate worse than death, you know.''

Five

Osman Ali Atto: I see not catching Aidid is becoming routine.
General William Garrison: We're not leaving Somalia until we find him. And we will find him.
Atto(scoffingYou've been here, what, six weeks? Six weeks, you tried to catch the General. You put up reward posters. $25,000. What's this, gunfight at K.O. Corral?
Garrison: It's O.K. Corral.
Atto: Don't make the mistake of thinking because I grew up without running water I am simple, General. I do know something about history. See all this? It's simply shaping tomorrow. A tomorrow without a lot of Arkansas white-boys' ideas in it.
Garrison: Well, I wouldn't know about that. I'm from Texas.
Atto: Mr. Garrison, I think you should not have come here. This is civil war. This is our war, not yours.
Garrison: Three hundred thousand dead and counting. That's not a war, Mr. Atto. That's genocide. ~From The Film Black Hawk Down.

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

Preach the Word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. ~2nd Timothy 4:1-4
