Shaking Hands With The Devil.

The Russians bombed a maternity hospital in Mariupol, Ukraine today, injuring 17 people and destroying the hospital.

This is an attempt at Genocide.

This is a fucking war crime.

Why the fuck is the world putting up with this evil goddamned bullshit?

And of course, the reason this shit is happening in the first place, is that the Russians cannot defeat the Ukrainian Army. So, of course they go after innocent civilians, like cowards murderers and thieves, and the US Department of Defense is worried about provoking these sons of bitches? 

The Russians are deliberately trying to provoke the rest of the world to further actions against Russia and start a war with NATO, so that Putin can sunder in twain the present world order of things and bring back the bipolar world of the Cold War, along with his Soviet-era repression...because he knows even if he doesn't defeat Ukraine, even if Belarus won't fight for him and slips from his grasp, and he cannot resurrect the old Soviet Bloc...there are some countries that will follow him. 

All the EU, US and other Western brands are closing down operations in Russia...which #1 I understand, #2 It makes sense, BUT #3 I can't help feeling like it plays right into Putin's hands as regards his plans for Russia and whoever else he can drag down with him. He wants people to be forced to go back to the days of the Soviet Union.

And I have a feeling he's going to get exactly that, and his country and his oligarchs are going to lose a lot of money...but they can rewire their connections over time. The common people who are trapped in this system though...they sure can't.

Russia has been busy in places like the Central African Republic and Syria. Brutal wars, military aid and money making Russia the only game in town for major-power backing. Of course those with money and a desire to avoid Soviet-era privation can always interface with (and through) China which still does (and will keep doing) much business with the West

If these motherfuckers can provoke a showdown with NATO (and it looks like they're going to try some false flag chemical weapon attack to do exactly that as well as to rally their population against Ukraine) well, OK. And Putin will escalate and incite until we don't have a choice but to act. When we do intervene directly, what then? 

It will certainly rally all these "Z" motherfuckers around Putin and the war. Just like Republicans...as long as he has his energized base of supporters that can keep everybody else at arm's length, he's good. 

Additionally he has to keep enough of his people in the military and the police to prevent a coup, but he can probably do that. He can likely deter direct attack with nukes. So he's safe. Vlad doesn't give a shit about anybody else. 

More to the point, at the same time if he can provoke internal conflict in the United States, and maybe even get Republicans to try and break off a piece of America for themselves...who else are they going to turn to? It seems like those fucking people would happily volunteer to be Putin's and the Oligarchs gateway to Western comforts...and given that Miami seems to be a favorite place they go to get they dicks sucked it seems like Florida would be one of the places they try to incite something. 

Oh, wait, Florida Republican spewing bullshit Russian propaganda already. Why am I not surprised. Disgusted, yes, but not surprised.

I'm old enough to remember when Republicans considered Russians in general...and people like Vladimir Putin in particular...to be the Enemy, if not the Devil Himself.

Now they make excuses for that KGB Man, and spread his propaganda. Ronald Reagan would weep.

Meanwhile Belarusians in Ukraine, and members of the Belarusian opposition, are fighting to defend Kyiv.

What the hell is Republicans' excuse for their own behavior?

I mean, seriously, are all of these so-called "Conservatives" taking Russian money at this point??

I'm honestly starting to wonder about that.

And meanwhile, while American "Conservatives" bitch about gas prices and try to persecute transgender people the kids in Ukraine are wearing stickers to school that show their blood type in case something happens. I don't know about you, but I think that's kind of fucked up.

American Republicans think it's an existential crisis if they can't harm or persecute other people. 

Meanwhile, Ukrainians are fighting to defend their country and stay free. So of course, Republicans side with the invaders and would-be enslavers and oppressors, because the cruelty is the goddamn point.

Again, if it was us instead of Ukraine being attacked...or us and Ukraine being attacked...how many of these Republicans would fight to defend their country and their own freedom, and how many of them would just surrender because they don't want to be free?

And more to the point, they don't want anybody else to be, either.

Not only that, but Republicans seem to be profoundly offended by the idea of an entire society coming together to defend its own freedom.

Personally, I think they're telling on themselves. They don't just want to shake hands with the Devil, they'd gladly join his side if he'd let them hurt people they don't like. It's really that simple.

If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth. And this idea that government is beholden to the people, that it has no other source of power except to sovereign people, is still the newest and most unique idea in all the long history of man's relation to man. This is the issue of this election. Whether we believe in our capacity for self-government or whether we abandon the American revolution and confess that a little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives for us better than we can plan them ourselves. ~Ronald Reagan

I saw this earlier, report from a Ukrainian intelligence officer relayed by one of the reporters that I follow.
Apparently, it's not an understatement to say that Vlad is getting his ass kicked, here. I mean, 30 helicopters lost to fire from Ukrainian Marines? By any measure, that's a bad day. In any NATO/Western armed service, whoever had command responsibility for that level of casualties would be in a world of shit right now. Hell, I don't know how Putin hasn't gone full Stalin on his Army command just to root out the incompetents who made this fucking mess. In the Red Army of old, people got shot for this type of thing.
Again, in any real terms here, the Ukrainians are winning, and the Russians are thus far failing to hold most of the territory they take. 
Remember "Freedom Fries?"

In 2002 during the run-up to the Iraq War, as a result of French opposition to American intentions to invade Iraq, some idiot North Carolina US House Representative had the cafeterias in the Capitol rename "French Fries" as "Freedom Fries" (Apparently following the lead of some restaurant in his district. Never mind that French Fries have nothing to do with France.)

So...what do you call it when some idiot MAGA Republicans (This guy is not the first one to say that type of shit) keep demanding that Ukraine (which, again, is winning the war) surrender to the goddamned Russians? Among other things, in 2014 when Russia attacked Ukraine the first time, Ukraine was then a declared neutral country. That didn't matter to Putin. And this asshole, Joe Kent, says he was a Green Beret.

I wasn't aware that surrendering to Dictators was a thing Special Operations guys would be cool with.

Or at some point, fitness standards were in the toilet. You pick, Joe. Which is it?

'Cause I'm here to tell you, I'm not going to be afraid of any armed forces that would be dumb enough to deploy an armored train in a combat zone. I mean, what is this? 1862? 1942? Hell, speaking as a veteran here I wasn't aware anybody still had that type of shit. This entire concept was proven to be outdated during World War II because a train can only go where the tracks go, and to eliminate it as a threat all you have to do is damage or destroy some of the tracks or disturb the railbed enough that it can't support the weight of the train. 

German Stuka dive-bomber pilots figured out very quickly that they could destroy Polish (and later, French) armored trains simply by bombing the tracks in front of an oncoming train.

In a video of this shit that I saw earlier, this train mounts a dual 23mm antiaircraft gun on one of the cars. Old-school ZSU-23 manned mount (as in aimed and fired by a human crew, not much technology) would be my guess. A Bayraktar TB2 UCAV carrying four UMTAS anti-tank missiles can hit that shit from eight Klicks away and at no risk to its operators who will be further behind the lines yet.

That's how much warfare has evolved since 1945. Think about that for a second.

And Republicans want the Ukrainians...and ultimately us, as well, to surrender to that type of shit?

I mean, seriously in what alternate Matrix world does that make any sense? Is your prejudice really that much more important to you than your freedom?

I have a confession to make.

I don't understand the Right's obsessive hatred of people's different pronouns these days. I just don't. 

And note, I say this as somebody who used to be a conservative whose beliefs were informed by the libertarian ethos of the Reagan era. I don't give a fuck what somebody's "Pronouns" or sexual orientation, etc. are. It's not my business. That's what I was taught. Also, I took a human sexuality class in college and learned that both gender and orientation are properly considered a spectrum in 2002 when I was still a moderately conservative Republican...if one well on my way out of Christianity.

Hell, if it was me, I'd appreciate that stuff being on somebody's nametag. Why? I'll admit to finding some of this gender-and-orientation stuff these days a little confusing...and a handy guide on your nametag makes that shit easier for me. I'll note that I saw my first actual they/them "in the wild" like eight years ago. Where the fuck has Erick been? 

It's a funny story, actually.

My (lesbian) roommate-at-the-time had this friend (biologically a girl) who was *Cough, let me see if I can get all this right in one go* Asexual, Gender-queer, Pan-Romantic, Pronouns They/Them. My first thought (and what I said in response to this being explained to me) was "Damn, that's a lot of thought to put into it, not to get no Booty." 

Even at the time, I saw this stuff as complicated, but fundamentally harmless to me or anyone else as a person. It's none of my business how somebody else defines themselves. That is a god-given human right. If how you feel inside or how you define yourself doesn't match the biological wrapping your soul is currently in...well, we have the capability now to do something about it, don't we?

And why shouldn't we, if it helps make life bearable for people?

 And I find it a little telling that Erick, Son of Erick, equates both different pronouns and individuality (in gender/sexuality terms at least) with...wait for it...Communism! Seriously, who took a wrong turn in the Matrix to come up with that one?

Granted, everything Republicans don't like is basically Communism these days.

Modern "Conservatism" is confusion.

There's a hell of a lot of people in this world right now, I think, who'd give an awful lot to have their only problem of record be "Being offended by social change."

Like, you know, the entire population of Ukraine, probably.

There's a war on, fundamentally because the KGB agent that rules Russia doesn't like Ukrainian people and thinks they should not exist. 

But of course people like Erick Erickson like Vladimir Putin, and genocide, and homophobia and transphobia and hate and petty resentment. So the guy that had to be a paragon of Communism to get to where he is, is of course Not Communist. Despite the fact that he's literally running every aspect of the Communist playbook right now in attempting to conquer Ukraine and subdue domestic opposition to the war. Russia is descending back into Soviet-era repression...if not Stalinist terror...because of one man and his supporters.

But the last thing we can expect from conservatives, as ever, is moral or even political consistency.

I predict that within days, if not hours, the Russian "Z" will replace "MAGA" as these people's favorite ideological symbol.

And that's assuming it hasn't already.

Because none of this bullshit was ever about any of the stuff these people say it's about. Modern "Conservatism" is solely about the ability of the powerful to do whatever they want to the less-powerful and whether that's people of different ethnic groups, races, or religions or sexuality doesn't really matter very much. Difference is only an excuse. Desire for self-determination appears to be a cause for war these days, unless of course you belong to exactly the right small group.

And It's all bullshit. This too, will change with time. That's exactly what these dishonest fucking people are afraid of. 

Consider that there was a time, actually an entire historically-significant era (The Classical era) and an entire hegemonic culture (Greco-Roman culture) that shaped...wait for it...Western Civilization, where Men above a certain social rank were more or less expected to be bisexual. It was that way until Christianity achieved dominant power in Roman/Byzantine society and it stayed that way low-key well into the 4th Century.

I think, if somebody had brought up the issue of "Pronouns" to the Romans at the height of the Empire in all its murderous glory (You know, what these fascists-and the Russians-say they want to emulate) the average Roman wouldn't have given a shit, so long as you make your offerings to the Emperor and the Gods. Rome was a pluralistic society.

But it's funny how nobody wants to talk about any of that.

I'm just tired as hell of these ridiculous people.

And I'm even more tired of the fact that they get to start wars over this bullshit.

I saw this earlier.

A little Ukrainian girl singing "Let It Go" from Frozen in a bomb shelter. I hope this kid makes it through OK, hell, I hope Disney sees that video and someday offers that kid a job. Girl even hits all the notes right, my God.

And these are the people...desperately seeking peace, solace, or at least distraction while the world shakes around them and their soldiers fight desperately so that their country remains free...that "Conservatives" are busy equating with the Antichrist. 

Because of course, I mean, of fucking course these fucking people would equate Vladimir Putin with Jesus. 

Because they wouldn't know the real one if He was coming in the clouds with power and glory and it could be seen like the lightning from the east is seen even in the west.

These fucking people...be they American or Russian or whatever...think anybody who plays to their culture war bullshit, petty hatreds and resentments is Jesus.

As somebody who was a Christian for most of my life, I seem to recall the Word has a thing or two to say about such people.

And it's always the same way, their hatred or ideological garbage is always the most important thing, and matters far more to them than anything God Himself might have to say. And there's nothing in the Universe that such people hate more than anybody else who's just trying to live their life and wants to be left alone by them while doing so.

Dude that's dressed like Liberace's Garden Gnome here is a perfect example.

Putin made Patriarch Kirill and the Russian Orthodox priests feel important and shit. He put their fake "Traditionalism" and homophobia center-stage. They'll endorse genocide and mass murder and terror tactics and war. 

They'll follow Putin right into hell, and they won't give a damn. They'll say it's Heaven just for a few more seconds of Earthly power and recognition. It was never about Christianity and it sure as hell wasn't about Jesus.

And there's a lot of Americans just like them.

Oh, and while I'm at it, that big "Trucker Convoy" that the Right has been making such a big deal about pretty much flopped. I guess even Sunday traffic on the Beltway was too much for them, they failed to stay together and quite a few of them got lost. 

So much for that attempt at revolution, I guess.

But ya know, it was the sign on the back of this truck that caught my attention. "The Matrix is real."

I wonder if that's how this guy feels.

A Russian prisoner of war, likely a senior NCO from the look of him, was videotaped by Ukrainian media saying that he and his soldiers had no idea what was going on and had been told a bunch of lies about Ukraine having been taken over by fascists and shit. Lies that they knew were lies the second they made contact with actual Ukrainians, and especially once the fighting started and they saw the Ukrainian soldiers fighting them.

Dude talked about how seeing that Vitali Klitschko and his brother...this guy's favorite boxers, evidently...were fighting against his army was an eye opener for him.

He talked about how Russians are constantly brainwashed with this stuff. Dude spoke at length about how a lot of people, not least of all many of the soldiers sent to fight in it, don't want this war.

But of course, those who will never have to go and fight, they love the idea.

Evidently the "Z" painted on the sides of so many Russian vehicles we've seen destroyed, has become the symbol of this new war and whatever godless ideology is behind it.

I would imagine that returning veterans are going to be a problem for this shit, though.

But see, here's the thing. Bear with me for a second.

I think at this point even if the Ukrainians win, or at least hang on, and even if Putin is removed from power one way or another over how badly this operation has been run, whatever idiot Kleptocrat takes over has a ready-made ideology and political movement and symbol to sustain his power. I think in such a case, the war in Ukraine might be scaled back, but would continue indefinitely....like Afghanistan or Iraq, for us. 

I think Goldman is right, we're in for a long war.

Why do I think that? Because if Putin survives and sustains his power, or if anybody who might replace him wants to establish their own...they're going to need an enemy to be against.

And double all that, if NATO gets involved and the more the EU (as an overall organization) and the US take the lead, the more fanatical these fucking people will be...just like US "Conservatives" who I'd argue have become much worse with Trump out of power and his influence starting to fade.

But here's the thing. I'll bet you money that it won't be long before "MAGA" itself falls by the wayside. I would put my money on the Russian "Z" becoming the new thing among the Edgelord "Own The Libs" Right...and making its way down to regular Republicans from there.

Especially if Putin falls (But likely even if he doesn't) "Z" will replace MAGA as the new INRI.

And if you don't think the Russians will take full advantage of that, no matter who is in power, you have another thing coming. The latent Gnosticism and secret desire for heresy that infests the "Christian" Right make certain that if the Russians package it cleverly...they'll bite that hook.

We're in for a long haul here, I'm afraid, against people who will straight-up try and deny reality if they have to, no matter how dystopian the results. If these people really think they're in some kind of "Matrix" we have a problem.

Human freedom and progress depends on enough people believing in reality and truth. Without Truth, no one has any basis by which to challenge Power.

Remember that part.

And the Authoritarian Right, as a global movement, doesn't care how many little girls singing in bomb shelters or old men standing guard with Kalashnikovs it has to bomb to get the kind of power that it wants, they don't care how many stupid conspiracy theories they have to make up or how many lies they have to tell, to make the Truth not matter anymore, to get people to stop believing in objective reality. Just making the effort for long enough break's some people's brains.

Putin is Antichrist, according to the Biblical definition.

But These Fucking People pretty much think he's god.

Think on that, and we'd better get to thinking on how to stop it, too.

Fiery The Angels Fell, Ukraine Edition.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I've watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those...moments will be lost in time, like tears...in rain. Time to die. ~Roy Batty, Blade Runner.

I just saw this. Video of an Mi-35 Hind being shot down by a MANPADS (MAN-Portable Air Defense System) likely an FIM-92 Stinger missile team in Ukraine.

Watch for that sudden stop at the bottom, Comrades.

Sorry, but I have no sympathy on this one. 

The Russians needed to fuck around and find out. Seems like that's about how this is going. Maybe, if this keeps up for a bit longer, they'll give up and go home. And think twice before they invade another country again. 

Yes, I know, this is mostly about one angry, deranged small man's ego. But too many people have gone along with this shit for too long. That's why that one guy is even a problem now.

Zelensky sits at a table with some of his soldiers in some roughed-out bunker somewhere in the field, talking about the War or the latest Football match or whatever Soldiers talk about when they got an honest-to-god chance to shoot the shit with a real honest-to-god hero. Somehow, the fact that he's their President seems...less relevant to them than that he's eating the same food, drinking from the same kind of cup and eating the same food while he's fighting the same fight that they are. These men, sitting at a common table, are tired, but at ease. Dude cares for his troops, you can see it.

Putin on the other hand sits at the end of some farcically-long table like the one in the first part of Coming To America where Akeem and the King had to talk to each other by intercom. Seriously, I don't know how the hell people look at this guy and see some kind of heroic strength.

Zelensky is That Guy, Putin is not

Hell, you can't even see enough of the people on the other end of the table to get some kind of impression of them. The distance between this man and his people is not just metaphorical or physical, it's a spiritual fact. He doesn't give a shit about any of them. And I would imagine they know it, and that's no small part of why the Russian Army is repeatedly getting its collective ass beat in the field.

For all of Russia's firepower and technical advantages, the Ukrainians are holding their own because they believe in their country, their god, and their leaders more than the Russians do.

Earlier today, Zelensky was on a Zoom call with a bunch of US Congress-members, and despite instructions not to, three Republicans Tweeted pictures of Zelensky.

I mean, dude literally has Chechens, the FSB, hell, the whole of the damn Russian Army after his ass and you're going to Tweet his picture and the fact that you're in this conversation when you were specifically asked not to? I mean, come on Marco, what the fuck?

Not that I think Captain Random Bible Verse cares one bit about Zelensky. It's a proven fact that Marco Rubio doesn't give a shit about anybody but Marco Rubio.

President Zelensky is basically the defender of the free world in this moment, and this is how he's treated by the "Conservatives?"

Of course it is. Who am I kidding even asking?

I saw the other day that when an Orthodox cathedral in Kyiv was damaged by Russian bombs, Zelensky said of Putin and the Russians "You can hide from us, but a bunker will not protect you from God." Note, Zelensky is Jewish. He didn't have to say that, concerning a Christian church, but he did it anyway.

Republicans, on the other hand, seem much more comfortable with Putin's Potemkin Russian Orthodox religiosity. It's worth noting that though 41% of Russians are Orthodox and 6% or so belong to other Christian faiths, both the number of actively observant Christians and the percentage of Christians as part of the population are far lower than in the United States.

And the amounts of abortion, alcoholism and drug  use are also higher as a percentage of the population.

So a lot of this talk about Putin and Russia having "Christian values" is pure crap, put forth by those who love Putin's authoritarianism far more than Russia's imagined Christian hegemony.

And more to the point of that 6% and change that are "Other Christians" the Evangelicals, Fundamentalists and Pentecostals are persecuted by the State, as increasingly are members of other religions...and Russia is a very religiously diverse country, just like the United States is.

And in point of fact, that this is known is one of the reasons why the Ukrainians...especially Ukrainian Believers...are fighting so hard against the Russian Army.

Likewise, it seems like not very many people actually want to fight all that hard for Russia.

And the fact that American Christians and "Conservatives" ignore the fact that their kind of Christians are persecuted in Russia tells me just as surely as their inability to follow simple directions does, that everything else that comes out of these people's mouths is a lie.

They don't care about any of this stuff. They don't care about anything at all.

They just like the idea of a country with an authoritarian President, an oligarchy, and a rubber-stamp government. It has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with actively undermining democracy and those who fight for it.

Of course, when I see it all over the internet today that a Russian recon squad got themselves trapped in an elevator because they were trying to get to the top of a building for Over-watch and too lazy to take the stairs...so the Ukrainians just cut the power to the elevator...I can honestly say I'm not too impressed with the forces of Authoritarianism here. Way to fail MOUT training on your first day, Comrades. I mean...Jesus. Dudes, what the fuck? You always take the stairs. In Military Operations in Urban Terrain training it's generally assumed the power is out.

And this is the enemy here, yo. These are the people think when they done with the Ukrainians they gonna take on NATO.

They cannot even subdue Ukraine. Think on that.

I find it disgusting that, when this is all over, we're probably going to find out that a big chunk of Putin's base of supporters was right here in the United States.

I'm a child of the late Cold War, a former Christian, a former conservative Republican, and I served my country. It makes me very, very damned angry that there is such a thing as an American who would support a KGB agent like Vladimir Putin for any reason whatever.

I don't give a damn what it is.

Either you believe in freedom or you don't. If American Conservatism rejects freedom then it becomes functionally incompatible with America. It's really that simple. Like tears in rain, time to die.

I'll tell you what. Take away any of the privilege or social status that goes with being a Christian in America and I'll bet you $10 that millions of these fucking people leave the faith of their own accord.

Iron Curtain Call (Reagan Wept, One.)

Today, there were huge demonstrations throughout Europe, which Ukrainian President Zelensky addressed by video uplink. All the sudden Europe and much of the world is united, and the Ukrainians are still fighting like hell, with even more supplies and weapons coming in so they can keep up the fight, even as Western corporations pull out of Russia or shut down operations and sanctions against oligarchs and Russia itself continue to pile up. I mean, seriously, when the International Cat Federation has banned you, that's saying something.

If Putin wanted to divide the EU and NATO, he's going about it the wrong way. In fact, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine have all applied for membership. 

Plus, the Ukrainians are still beating the shit out of the Russian Army.

And Russian logistics and maintenance are still falling apart, as crazy as that may seem.

Here's a snip from a video of primarily Cold War-era equipment having just been entrained in the Russian Far East, that right there is a ZSU-23 Self-propelled quad Anti-Aircraft Gun system. So, Ivan wants to party like it's 1985? What? 

It's the type of weapon system the US Armed Forces pretty much got rid of by the early 1990's because missiles work better for that sort of thing.

A word of warning though, those damned things were fucking dangerous in urban combat against snipers and shit in Chechnya, turns out if you pour enough smaller-caliber fire into it, that'll wreck a building sure as a 120mm cannon shell, and the guns can elevate much higher. So maybe it's more "Party like it's 1995" after all.

So the fact that Ivan may be going...or stuck with...old school is not always going to be a good thing here. Some of this stuff is still in use because it actually works

Maybe it's not much good for its intended purpose, but it does work.

And people in places like Prague and Warsaw? They remember seeing that shit around, and knowing that their country was under default occupation by their "Fraternal Socialist Allies" or some such bullshit. And remember, that's what some people...both on the far-right and on the far-left...seem to want for America, nowadays.

And that happens only because These Fucking People think they or their shitty ideology or whatever would get something from it. It's not just that there's no better reason for it than that, there's simply no other reason at all.

While the media obsesses about dumb shit and Republicans find themselves caught with their arms buried up to the elbow in the Russian bear's ass, Ukrainians fight like hell and the Russian Army rips itself to pieces at their hands and due to logistical, mechanical and morale failures. 

Here's that 40-mile long convoy I keep hearing about, completely stalled due to a combination of Ukrainian attacks and vehicles running out of fuel. Hell, it'll take the Russians a month just to get this mess straightened up. That convoy isn't going anywhere forward for a long damned time, just the logistics of keeping it fueled seem like an epic-level soup sandwich. 

By comparison, it'd take a squadron of Ukrainian Air Force Su-25 Frogfoots a couple of hours to turn that shit into a repeat of the Kuwaiti "Highway Of Death" during the first Iraq War.

But honestly, it's probably easier to just let it sit there and let the troops run out of food. That shit ain't going anywhere for awhile now. And people thought these motherfuckers were going to pose a threat to the EU and NATO?

I don't think so, Comrades. I think if the world wasn't so angry and disgusted, people would be laughing at you. Y'all can't even do preventative maintenance and tires right (Seriously, there's a hell of a thread about this on Twitter) how you gonna win a war?

It seems like there were a number of epochal miscalculations here.

That, and despite the threat of 15-year prison terms for protesting, and a ban on all independent media, there's still Russians taking to the streets and protesting, and evidently there's a shitload of people leaving Russia due to the possibility that martial law may be enacted.

It's funny how unpopular Vladimir Putin's ideal of an Imperialist "Holy Russian Empire" is not very popular with, you know, Russians.

But as Russia slides back into Soviet-era repression and mixes that with North Korean-style isolation, Republicans just can't wait to suck up to Putin, talk up all kind of dumb shit and in general keep prioritizing their own selfish, stupid bullshit over what's actually happening out there in the world.

These aren't the people with whom Reagan's "Tear Down This Wall" speech resonated, not anymore, at least. And before we take on authoritarianism and nationalism over there, well, we have a problem with that shit right here, and right now, ourselves. 

We have an anti-American fifth column, and it's mostly composed of Republicans. We need to deal with that. 

I think Reagan would weep to see what's become of the Republican Party.

In 1987 the Gipper said "Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev...Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" In 2022 Putin is going to slam the gate shut, and put up walls in a different place, and Republicans will cheer for it. There's an iron curtain hanging over Russia again and Putin is about to pull the rope to lower it. We'd best make sure it doesn't swallow up Ukraine, too.

Who the hell misses the Berlin Wall?

Nuketown (Glory To Ukraine V.)

Apparently, in Ukraine, the world's largest nuclear power plant is on fire and there's a firefight going on inside it between Russian and Ukrainian soldiers.

I mean, the fuck?

Does the idea of a gun battle right smack in the middle of a giant, Soviet-era nuclear power plant sound like a bad idea to you, or is it just me?

I think I'm gonna go out on not-much-of-a-limb here and say that's a bit problematic, don't you think?

It seems to me, that since the Ukrainian Armed Forces...and indeed, the common people, refuse to give up and are, in fact, whipping his army, Putin has simply decided to be as destructive as possible. Even though a majority of the citizens of Belarus and the Russian Federation don't want this war. 

In a war that only a tiny few want, an entire country and people are now being put at risk of nuclear contamination because *Checks Notes* One man didn't like them?

That's real fucked up, I think.

You know, maybe it's just me, but I thought after WWII and the Nuremburg trials, after Bosnia, or Liberia and Sierra Leone and people like Charles Taylor and Radovan Karadzic getting locked up, hell, after Muammar Gaddafi was dragged from a drainpipe and shot by his own people, you'd think humanity would learn this sort of lesson.

Look, I hate to rain on anyone's parade here, but at the rate this is going the US and NATO are going to have to get involved, we all are going to have to, at the very least, provide air support to the Ukrainians as well as substantial amounts of humanitarian aid at this point. Honestly, I would not rule out ground troops either. 

Why? Because if this war causes one or more nuclear disasters, they absolutely will affect the rest of the world; just like Chernobyl did. Putin is trying to burn down the whole international order, here. It's not working, put he's going to keep trying until he's in the dock at The Hague or up against a wall smoking that last cigarette.

Hell, the war in Ukraine as a whole already has. This is going to end up being World War III whether we like it or not. I'm not saying the Russians are going to conquer Ukraine and then turn west and invade the Baltic states or something. 

I'm saying the chaotic spillover from actions like attacking nuclear power plants is going to hit other countries and then the rest of the world is going to have to get involved. Note: There will be those, however few, who step in on Russia's side, here.

And I'm here to tell you, this shit will only get worse. Now, I don't know how it can get worse than a goddamn firefight in the middle of a nuclear power plant...I mean, seriously, the vibe from Aliens and some other pretty dark science fiction here is quite real...but I'm sure the Russians will find a way.

I hate war, but we as a species are going to have to deal with this evil bullshit, and that usually only goes one way.

Meanwhile, American Christians and Republicans are already trying to find ways to use this crisis for nothing more than their own partisan political benefit and to try and look righteous.

And no, I'm not surprised, just utterly disgusted.

At this point, if you're not willing to do something, you're wasting your time.

Again, if it was us instead of Ukraine, or us and Ukraine that Russia had invaded,, would we be doing as well as the Ukrainians are? Not if Marsha Blackburn could help it.

Praying for peace won't do any good here, we're going to have to step up and fight to reestablish that peace and the small-L, small-D liberal democratic order that it made possible.

We're. Going. To. Have. To. Fight.

And I suspect it won't be long before it comes to that, and we're all going to have to make some choices.

And make the right ones.

Otherwise, people like Putin will keep doing what they do, and this NukeTown bullshit and people sleeping on the cold, cold ground in the middle of winter, and the power of autocrats and the corporations that profit from fascism...otherwise that becomes our future. A world where leaders are chosen by the mob and removed by assassination, if at all. Where one guy sitting at the end of a ridiculously long table is somehow supposed to look "strong" rather than afraid, isolated, and lonely.

And that is the future that Autocrats and "Conservatives" want.

Don't let them have it.

Over the last six days, I've been watching this nasty business in Ukraine, like the rest of the world is, I suppose, and I've noticed something. It seems like whatever evil spell has cast a pall of apathy on the world is starting to lift a little bit...or at least, maybe enough people are starting to give a shit again? 

Or at least, the majority of us that aren't far-right "Conservatives" are?

Of course, like it or not now we're all watching as one society comes together in the face of an absolute horror, an onslaught by a larger neighbor, which seems to have as its goal not conquest, but simple destruction for its own sake. I mean, if the Russians had wanted to fight and win blah blah blah, wouldn't they have given their troops enough food or fuel or trained them properly? This is, like it or not, the descendant of the Red Army that fought the Nazis all the way from the suburbs of Moscow in 1941 to kicking in the gates of Berlin in 1945 and raising the Hammer and Sickle above the Reichstag in one of history's most famous photos.
But the Russians collectively aren't That Guy anymore, the way the Russians are doing this smacks of how the Soviets fought in Afghanistan, only worse, it's not just no food and poor morale. Now it's no fuel, no training, hell, not even knowing why they're there. 

And Ukrainians are literally martyring themselves to stop the invader...like so many Soviet citizens did in 1941, to be honest. Here's a whole town, kneeling reverently as a Ukrainian combat engineer is laid to rest. Goddamn, I hope they at least name something cool after that kid, like a park or a scholarship program for engineering students or something.

I mean, in a way it's no wonder that the Ukrainians are kicking Ivan's ass...and it's not like Ivan doesn't deserve it, at least as far as I'm concerned. The way the Russians are fighting this war, they deserve to lose, to lose badly, and to spend a generation trying to rethink themselves, like we supposedly did after Vietnam. (Yes, I get that those lessons were applied unevenly and ignored by too many. I know, I was there for a little of this.)

Of course, by 2001 we had forgotten or started ignoring a lot of those lessons, and the Bush-era ethos of "If we believe it hard enough, we'll win" was all-pervasive. All too many of the units created because of those hard lessons in Vietnam....light infantry divisions, whole wings of A-10 Thunderbolt II strike fighters, etc. had gone on the ash heap of history right along with the First Cold War, and not entirely without reason, of course.  Other things, like precision-guided munitions, have if anything become the standard for us. We're not even talking about BUFF's or Bones dropping sticks of Mark 117's on targets anymore, or search and destroy missions or thunder runs, or even Tactical Control Parties in harm's way to call in a strike. Nowadays, it's so often drones, GPS and satellites now...and all the munitions are PGM's.  And more importantly, discipline, training, and volunteerism. The Ukrainians get this...or they got it fast enough when the situation called for it, anyway. And their ethos and use of technology, training and weapons we've provided them has been amazing.

Against that, it's no wonder that the Russians can't get it up. But the fact that Russian soldiers are being cursed by random Ukrainian women probably isn't helping.

I'm going to be honest, I fully expected the Ukrainians would give the Russians a bad time of it, but not this bad. I very much expected a larger-scale repeat of Georgia in 2008, the Georgians gave better than they got, too. But that war was still in every real sense, a Russian victory. I figured they would try and grab some territory, face some clap back from the West and not only that it would have been over now, but that despite bloody losses the Russians would grab some territory, and come out ahead...drawing a reduced Ukraine further into Western orbit....but not from a position of strength, and with all that entails.

Instead, the opposite happened, the Ukrainians are kicking ass, and being drawn further into Western orbit. And there's a real chance, I think, of NATO intervention on Ukraine's side in this. Even if we half-ass it like I think we will, that's a disaster for the Russians. It's basically the level of worst-case scenario somebody probably would have had to eat a Polonium sandwich for predicting last week.

So, what the hell is Republicans' collective problem, here?

Guys like Chuck Colson, George H.W. Bush, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan must be watching this from the Afterlife with Gerald Ford popping the popcorn and John McCain throwing stuff at the TV while shouting "Valuable" tactical advice while JFK and LBJ go out on a beer run and Ike and Truman grill the steaks and nobody can find G. Gordon Liddy 'cause he's rubbing one out in the bathroom. 

I mean, so far this shit is making Afghanistan in 1986 look like a walk in the park. The old Republican Party would've been all for it.

Meanwhile, modern Republicans are complaining about Russia being "Canceled" and Madison Cawthorn is talking complete nonsense and Blowbert and MTG are going full Grocery Store Karen on the House Floor...I mean, Jesus, what the fuck?

Against all odds, against every possible prediction, the Ukrainians are not just holding their own...in a tactical sense they're winning, strategically forcing the Russians into bloody stalemate, and all the usual Soviet-era terror tactics are doing is enraging the Ukrainians even more.

And at least some of the Republicans hate the Ukrainians for winning. I used to be a Republican, I would never have imagined that in my own lifetime Republicans would be rooting not just for Russia...but for a KGB agent.

Of course, the absolute truth here is that too many Republicans were hoping for a Russian victory because they see both Russia and Ukraine as Culture War proxies and they thought Putin was going to crush the "Sexual Anarchy" in Ukraine that exists only in Republicans' heads.

But like Tea Party Joe Walsh said, Republicans want a bully, a dictator, and of course Putin is their Replacement Trump now. So there's that. 

But Republicans would do well to remember a few things.

The first one being, of course, that somebody will always stand up. It's to profound Republican and Russian misfortune that somebody in this case is basically the whole damn country of Ukraine.

Second, a bully or a dictator is always going to meet somebody worse than they are, eventually, and to their profound misfortune. Unless they cave in completely like Trump did to Putin in Helsinki.

Third, horror always begets more horror. Ukrainian special forces are saying now that they won't take Russian field artillery troops prisoner. That's a nasty business there, and while I doubt anybody will prosecute the Ukrainians for it, especially considering the scale of Russian atrocities, it's a war crime in and of itself. I've written about this, or at least I did so in an American context.

But the point is, like attracts like. You start doing unto others, they're going to do it back. Fate or God or History or whatever is always going to settle up with you eventually, just like it did with us in Afghanistan. The Man always comes around, in the end, and everybody won't be treated all the same.

Remember that part, there'll be a test later.

I quite honestly wonder, if it was us, and not Ukraine, would we be fighting so hard or holding together so well? Or would Florida and Texas and a couple other Red States governments be trying to join the Russians?

How many of these "Let's Go Brandon" and "MAGA" idiots would be hanging new flags printed in Cyrillic? How many Donetsk and Luhansk little Potemkin "People's Republics" would there be here?

How quickly would Kyiv and Washington D.C. or Kharkiv and New York City simply become battlefronts in the same war?

Most Americans would fight like hell. But some would happily join the bad guys.

Their fate is our fate. Together we win, or none of us do. You're either an American, a Western person steeped in the values of the Enlightenment that shaped our modern world...or you're not.

You're going to have to pick a side. Every person is going to have to. Either you believe in freedom or you don't. We hang together, or we hang separately.

Remember that.
